What is UltraBac?

UltraBac is the fast and reliable backup and disaster recovery solution for Windows NT/2000. UltraBac has a number of features including ‘on-the-fly’ backup, image backup, disk-to-disk backup and it very easy to install and use.

Why should I purchase UltraBac?

Downtime is costly, so resuming normal computer operations as quickly as you can after a crash is the number one goal for any system manager. UltraBac provides you with a fast and reliable backup and disaster recovery with a number of added features including easy install and use; disk-to-disk or disk-to-tape backup, image backup and automatic open shared file processing. There are a number of competitively priced licensing options for UltraBac, making it an essential backup solution for Windows NT/2000 enterprises of any size

Can UltraBac e-mail the backup logs to my assistants? 

UltraBac can e-mail just the errors or the full logs to just you or distribution lists via MAPI or SMTP mail services.

Can UltraBac handle my autoloader in library mode? 

UltraBac can handle most autoloaders in sequential or library modes. Library mode has the added advantage of allowing verification of the backup.

Can UltraBac handle my Netware volumes? 

By utilising the Netware agent UltraBac can backup from and restore too Netware servers ensuring that your enterprise backup needs are centralised and streamlined

Can UltraBac provide any security for my backup tapes? 

When media is prepared for use by UltraBac you can specify a number of options including the life of the media in terms of number of uses, how long to protect the the media before it can be used again and of course password security.

 Does UltraBac have any disaster recovery functions? 

UltraBac can make disaster recovery images of whole disks. If a machine’s disk drive should fail or an operating system become corrupted an image can be restored and the machine booted back to the state when the image was taken.

How do I make copies of my tapes for archive using UltraBac? 

Simply run the inexpensive extra cost option of UltraCopy. This will give you a quick and simple solution to all your tape duplication needs.

How do I upgrade my UltraBac product? 

When new versions are released it is a simple matter of running the new instal.exe file supplied to you and the kit will unpack and upgrade automatically. You can, of course, keep all your existing configurations and schedule settings but we recommend you make a copy of all the UltraBac directories.

I am rapidly running out of backup window and need to improve my backup times, how can UltraBac help? 

UltraBac can write to multiple tape devices simultaneously with stripe sets. All you have to do is add another locally attached tape device, define it to UltraBac as a member of a device set and point your backup set to this logical device. Device sets are another inexpensive way to increase the functionality of the UltraBac product.

I have purchased an enterprise license for UltraBac and have been backing up data on my servers, can I also backup workstations?

Yes you can, with the enterprise license you can backup unlimited workstations and with the Win95 agent you can backup down level clients too.

I have two tape devices attached to my backup server and I want to run two separate backup schedules, how do I do this with UltraBac?

Simply create your sets as usual and then add them to the separate backup groups via the scheduler, define each tape device to its specific backup group and specify the same start time. The backups will now stream to the tape devices independently of each other.

I need to backup multiple MS Exchange servers and have single mailbox restore capability, can UltraBac cater for my needs? 

UltraBac can backup your entire MS Exchange server or just the mailboxes themselves, from the mailbox backup you can restore a single mailbox quickly and simply via the gui. The unique agent technology means no client piece on the MS Exchange server and a single cost option for all your MS Exchange machines.

I need to stop the services of a bespoke application before I can back it up, can I integrate this with UltraBac. 

Yes you can, simply specify a before and after job to run as an option of the appropriate scheduled set.

I regularly merge databases that keep two sites synchronised and have had problems in the past when unsuccessful merges have left me with a lot of manual fixing up to do, can UltraBac run ‘ad hoc’ backups? 

Yes, UltraBac can run backups immediately from the GUI. Simply load the selected files and click perform backup.

I want a backup solution that gives me the flexibility to run the same backup set to tape and disk. 

This is known as the safety net backup and is the best way to maintain critical data and improve restore times for ad hoc restores.

If I have multiple SQL servers on my network how many agents will I need and how do I install the agents on the SQL server? 

UltraBac has unique agent technology that does not require a client agent on the remote SQL server. The SQL agent is a single cost option and once purchased allows you to back up as many SQL servers as you wish.

Most backup software tends to be bulky and complicated, is this true of UltraBac?

No!, UltraBac was specifically written for MS operating systems and hence once unpacked it occupies less than 7mb of disk space, it has an optional online help manual that is probably the most comprehensive of any software product and provides links to the web for the very latest updates.

 Restore times are critical for us, how does UltraBac handle set indexes? 

UltraBac keeps an index on each tape that allows for very quick indexing of the sets of files on that tape, once you have selected the files to restore from the index UltraBac positions the tape and reads back the files. A second copy of the index is keep for a pre determined time on the UltraBac server, simply find the index required from the list and load the index, insert the appropriate tape and the restore is accomplished in the minimum time.

What happens if a tape device should fail during a backup? 

UltraBac has options to cascade to another locally attached tape device or network disk should a device fail during backup. You can specify from what point UltraBac will restart the backup and this failure tolerance can include as many devices as you wish to specify.

What is the SAVI function found in the preferences applet of UltraBac? 

 UltraBac integrates with Sophos Anti-Virus to provide automatic detection of viruses during backup. Options include disinfection and reporting on detected viruses.

When I purchase UltraBac do I need to reinstall? 

 No!, UltraBac is always a full release product and the license key determines if the product will time out or what options will be enabled.
